On a very basic level, the idea of social work is built on the idea that people can work to help other people and in so doing improve not just that person's life but the society or community in which they live.  So quite often social work is associated with values such as altruism, generosity, caring for other people, wanting to give back to a community or even to a particular individual.

Social work is not often a place where people go to make a huge amount of money, more often than not they are motivated to join the ranks of social workers because of a desire to do good, to derive meaning from the work they do with people that face disadvantages or obstacles that the social worker may be able to help them overcome.
