Different types of operating systems used in computers include:

  • Real time operating system (RTOS): used for real time applications such as scientific research, air traffic control, etc. Here the time interval between information input, processing and output is very small.
  • single user and multi user operating system: can allow either a single user or multiple users to interact with the system at once. Palm OS is a single user operating system, while UNIX is multi-user operating system.
  • single task and multi task operating system: Either a single task can take place or multiple tasks can be carried out on time-sharing basis. An example of multi-task operating system is LINUX.
  • distributed operating system: controls several individual computers through networking and manages them.
  • embedded operating system: useful in embedded systems and have less autonomy and control few operations.
