The two wars between Israel and the various Arab countries that are best known to us in the United States are the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War. The Six-Day War was fought in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War was fought in 1973. In the Six-Day War the Israelis attacked first, believing that war was inevitable. In the Yom Kippur War, Egypt and Syria attacked first.
Of these two wars, the Six-Day War is the more important to us today. In that war, Israel too Arab territories that included the West Bank and Gaza. These territories remain as flashpoints of conflict between the Israelis who still rule them and the Palestinians who want a country of their own made from these two areas.
