There are a number of conditions that are critical to the production of high quality oil from mint plants. These are:

  • Temperature: For better growth of mint and production of high quality oil, temperature conditions must be appropriate. The ideal conditions are longer days with warm daytime temperatures and cold nights during the growing phase.
  • Harvest time: This is determined by pre-harvest sampling. During such sampling, oil composition is monitored over time and best harvesting time is selected for getting highest quality oil yield.
  • Fertilization: This is required to achieve higher quality oil and better yield. Phosphorus and potassium content in the soil needs to be maintained by fertilization, if required. Nitrogenous fertilizers are added to stimulate foliage and enhance oil quality. In some cases, instead of chemical fertilizers, manure or compost may also be used for improving the nutrient content of soil.

Hope this helps.
