A train leaves the station at 12noon. It is 180 miles from its destination at 12:45pm and 90 miles from its destination at 2:15pm. How far is the station from the destination?  at what time will the train reach the destination?

An illustration of the letter 'A' in a speech bubbles

12.45 : 180

14.15 : 90

In 90 minutes the train has gone 90 miles (from 12.45 to 2.15pm)

If the train is travelling at a constant speed, as assumed, then in the first 45 minutes (from 12 to 12.45) it must have gone 45 miles.

`therefore` 45 + 90 + 90 = 225 miles  or        45 + 180 = 225 miles

The time relates to the distance so it would be `3 3/4` hours- or 225 minutes which is 3:45pm
