I've never owned a smartphone. The one I have now has WAP internet and Java disabled so I can't play games on it. Honestly, until I make a lot more money I'm not going to bother; cell phones are phones. I use mine to make calls, text, and occasionally check my email. It's not a big deal to me when super-ultra-new-fantabulous phones come out.
Of course, "a lifetime in cellphone years" is how long in chronological time? Maybe twelve months? I don't know and don't care - my point is that, regardless of when the iPhone 5 (or any other new and improved version, size, or app for any cellphone) is released, efforts to render it outmoded and obsolete will begin no later than 24 hours after the release.
Just to strike a discordant note, do we really need another new iPhone? Don't get me wrong: I am not a Luddite, but I find that I have so little time in my life nowadays anyway and I don't even have a cell phone. I can't imagine how little time I would have if I bought one.
Personally, I love my iPhone. I still have the 3G3, and it works fine. In fact, I dropped my phone and the screen shattered so I needed to replace it, and I got another 3GS instead of the 4, because I didn't see what the fuss was about. The only disadvantage is that they don't make many accessories for the 3GS any more.
