Bravery is one of many positive qualities that Atticus models for his children. In Chapter 9 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout learns that Atticus plans to defend a black man, Tom Robinson, who has been accused of raping a white woman. Atticus plans to give Tom the best defense he can although many people in the community disagree. Atticus admits to Scout that he will not win the case. When Scout asks why, Atticus replies, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win." This quote demonstrates bravery because Atticus will not back down from doing what's right.
