Compare and contrast two stories: either "A Rose for Emily," "Hills like White Elephants," or "The Things they Carried." I dont see the three map points for my paper.
If I had to do this assignment, I would choose "The Things They Carried" and "A Rose for Emily." One point would be to compare Lt. Jimmy Cross and Miss Emily. Both have trouble letting go of the past and both live in their own "daydream" worlds (Cross snaps out of his once one of his men is killed). Another point you could address is symbolism in both stories. There are symbols in both, including the items Cross carries and the time piece Miss Emily wears. There are a lot of other symbols, as well. Finally, you could address the important of the time periods of both stories. Both time periods were ones of enormous change in this country.
I would probably pick "Hills Like White Elephants" to compare with "A Rose for Emily." I would look into the narrative and point of view, and the way that both stories leave the reader to decide precisely what happened rather than tells us explicitly. I think this is a really interesting aspect in both of these short stories - it forces us to read actively and become engaged and not be lazy readers.
