Bassett wanted to tell Paul that he had done what Paul had asked him, and he had won eighty thousand pounds. This news does bring Paul out of his unconsciousness, and he just keeps repeating Malabar's name over and over. "I never told you, Mother, that if I can ride my horse, and get there, then I'm absolutely sure--oh, absolutely! Mother, did I ever tell you? I am lucky!" Paul had told his mother earlier in the story that he was lucky, but she didn't remember him saying it to her, since at that time she really didn't pay attention to much of what Paul said to her.
