Christopher Columbus is remembered in history for his accidental discovery of America in 1492. This voyage and the background to it, in which Columbus intended on reaching the Orient, poses a lot of questions which you might like to ask. Firstly, how did Columbus finance the voyage? Who did he seek financial and political support from? Secondly, what was life like aboard his ships? Did they face any particular obstacles or challenges? How did they overcome these and how long did it take Columbus and his fleet to find land? Finally, when Columbus had reached what he thought was the Orient, what were his initial feelings? How soon after landing did he meet with the native population and what were these early encounters like? Are there any written records of these meetings?
