According to dictionary.com a thesis statement is "a short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay or research paper. It is developed, supported and explained in the text by means of examples and evidence."

Here are some general guidelines for creating good thesis statements:

  1. Arguable – Reasonable people could disagree
  2. Supportable – Can be backed up with evidence
  3. Specific – Not vague, not too general, not too broad
  4. “Maps out” the paper – Gives the reader a guide to the organization of the argument
  5. Third person – No "I" or "me" in the paper

In order to create a thesis statement for the three "poems" in Sarajevo Blues by Semezdin Mehmedinović, you need to decide on one specific point to compare all three poems on. For example, Mehmedinović uses vivid detail in his poetry which helps the reader to picture elements of the siege that took place there. A sample thesis using vivid detail as the epicenter could read as follows:

Mehmedinović's use of detail in Sarajevo Blues, specifically in his works "Photographers," "Milomir Kovacevic," and "Massacre," give his reader a realistic portrayal of the horrific circumstances of the recent war in Bosnia-Hercegovina.

Though your thesis statement does not need to focus on Mehmedinović's use of detail, you can use this thesis as an example to format your own. It is helpful to find one similarity between the three poems, and then go from there. Remember, a thesis statement lets the reader know what the paper will be about and is supported by examples in the body of the paper.
