I am really stuck here and was wondering if anyone could help me out abit. We read an essay in which the main topic basically was that parenting has no effect on a child's behavior or personality or development. My task is basically to write an essay which must be of the opposite view of the author. So what I was thinking was writing about how parents do effect the anti social and pro social behavior of children. The only thing is I am having difficulties finding good journal articles. Anyone have any other suggestions on what to write about?
Your high school library probably has access to many data bases that provide academic research possibilities. These data bases will be able to provide you with peer reviewed articles on almost any topic available. Our high school uses academic search premier or the gale group. I would imagine most schools have some similar service.
I think you are off to a great start with your essay. The most important piece of advice to remember with a thesis is that it must be specific. What you seem to be arguing is:
Although the author we read about asserts that a child's genetic makeup is the sole determining factor in personality devlopment, there is evidence that, in fact, supports the opposite: parenting style plays a large role in determining a child's personality, specifically in reference to anti- or pro-social behavior.
This thesis is good because it focuses in on one area of personality (socialization), rather than trying to address EVERY area--make sure that, when writing your essay, you keep the focus strictly to anti- and pro- social behavior! I would not suggest adding other aspects of development because, while it might add length, it will take away from the specific focus.
In terms of finding journal articles, Google Scholar is a great resource. Even just doing a quick look, I found this essay from the Annual Journal of Psychology: http://arjournals.annualreviews.org/doi/abs/10.1146%2Fannurev.psych.51.1.1
Try using keywords like "effects of parenting," or "anti-social behavior in children" when you search.
Hope that is helpful, and good luck!
Your thesis statement should be the second to last thing you write. The thesis statement summarizes the entire paper into one sentence. It should be constructed in a similar fashion as this:
"In the story....the author had the intentions of making three points; which were....".
The topic should entail every point your essay is making. I woould like to give you recommended essay writing companies to seek the help from. good luck.
