Please help me find two figures of speech in the song "Carefully Taught."  The text is below.

" Mandy Patinkin - South Pacific - ""Carefully Taught""

You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

Thanks..

The lyrics to the song "You've Got to be Taught" were written by the great lyricist Oscar Hammerstein.

The most outstanding figure of speech used in this song is anaphora--the repetition of a phraseThe phrase "You've got to be taught" appears in this short song 4 times; it is altered, just slightly, to "You've got to be carefully taught" an additional 3 times; it is also echoed in the phrase "it's got to be drummed."

Another instance of anaphora is in lines 9-10:

Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade.

Another figure of speech is in the following lines:

It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear.

The author of the song does not mean that people literally drum hateful messages into the ears of their people.  Rather, this is a metaphor, a comparison that does not use the word "like" or "as."  The author means that people teach intolerance with such force that it is as if they were drumming it into their childrens' ears.
