This novel is a fairly romanticized depiction of adolescent sexuality. But there is also some recognizably realistic material, as when the two lovers, Katharine and Michael, are determined to be together forever but are affected by family events and Katherine's eventual attraction to another boy. The deeply dramatic portrayal of their love includes scenes of sexuality that range from tenderly awkward to rather implausibly experienced. There is also very little attention paid to the issues of birth control or sexually transmitted diseases—issues that are usually fairly significant for adolescents.

There are a number of coming-of-age films that depict adolescent love and sex in this highly romantic, dramatic way. These days, the trend is toward more realistic and believable portrayals of teenagers in film....
