Is there any benefit to shutting down the computer at the end of the day?
I am talking about a PC laptop. Is there any difference between simply closing the cover and putting it into the STANDBY or HIBERNATE mode, and shutting it down completely?
Let me put down my own analysis first.
ADVANTAGES of Leaving it On:
1. You can leave applications/ programs running.
2. You don't have to waste time turning it off and on the next day.
Of course, you avoid the (small) possibility that the computer will have problems starting up the next day.
QUESTION: Does turning the computer off somehow change its memory? Are there any "INTERNAL benefits," so to speak, to shutting it down at the end of the day?
Please explain. Thanks.
There are both pros and cons when deciding whether or not to shut your computer down at night. Let's discuss the pros first. Say for example that your computer is on and the power goes out. There is the potential that your computer could be damaged. If there were programs running then you could also lose data. If your computer is off then you do not have to worry about this.
There are also some cons. Turning off your computer takes time. So you need to ask yourself if it is worth taking the time every night to shut it down.
Remember that if your computer is in hibernate mode then it is not using very much electricity at all but it is still using some. You will be saving some money.
If you have a program running on the computer then naturally it makes no sense in turning off the computer or even putting it in standby mode. every computer is meant to run programs and you can do this when you turn off a computer.
But when you are not using the computer in any way, that is neither actively interacting with the computer, or running some background program, you have the option of shutting it down or just putting it in standby mode.
The disadvantage of shutting down is the additional time and effort of switching it on. And the disadvantage of leaving it on are primarily the power consumption and the additional wear and tear of the computer. All this boils down to basically money, and to some extent the the ethical issue of not wasting energy. In any case the decision is heavily influenced by individual preferences. I personally do not find the the trouble of restarting the computer too much if I do not intend to use it for even for a period for an hour or two. I certainly don't keep my computer on overnight, even if I am not working on it.
If you have your laptop docked and connected to Electricity then you will have no issue. On battery only you may run out of power in which case what you have not saved will be lost and left in this state for too long you may begin to lose even saved data. I would make it a habit to save everything you are working on at least once a day.
