Phillip Yancey writes a very intriguing book. In The Jesus I Never Knew, he takes on a journey through the life of Jesus. He makes us at things slightly differently then the way we are used to looking at Jesus.
Yancey wrote the book for his own questions he had. He starts the book looking at the Jesus we all learned about as a child. He says the what we learned then, is not necessarily the correct version of Jesus. His views of Jesus change over time. As he matures he sees Jesus in a different way. He becomes confused so he decides to strip away all the preconceived notions of who Jesus is. He wants to take away what the church and people who claim to follow Jesus, tell us about Jesus, and wants to find out on his own. He starts with the birth of Jesus. "Why did God come in the form of a baby?" is just one of the questions he asks us. He realizes that God came in that form, to be humble and really relate to humans. He realizes that all of the sources for who Jesus is, are found in the Gospels. He goes into great length of who Jesus is in all of the Gospels. Jesus had temptations he had to over come. He was tempted by satan. The Sermon on the Mount, is gone into great detail. This in particular part of the Gospel, really sums up who Jesus is and what his mission was. The last part of the book, looks at the lasting effects on why Jesus came and what it means to all of us. In the end it shows us just how much God loves all of us and how much he wants us to love him in return.
The book is a little hard to read, because it makes you rethink everything you were taught as a child. Even the way Jesus is described as looking to us, might not be exactly true. The bottom line is that the book reiterates the love God has for us and why Jesus came. Anyone who has ever questioned who Jesus really is, should give this book a read.
