In terms of "comparative literature", what can we make of the relation between George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion and Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House?
I am doing a project in "comparative literature" trying to study and analyze the relation and influences between George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion and Henrik Ibsen's play A Doll's House... thanks for any help...
The term “comparative” crosses many studies, most strictly language divisions (departents in College are divided by language), but also genre divisions; here, the “comparative” element seems to be thematic, in that both playwrights are treating the freeing of the feminine depersonalization by men. While Ibsen wrote in Norwegian, his play gained popularity in all countries in English translation during the period of realism that also included Shaw’s Pygmalion, so in terms of comparative literature, we could say that a cross-cultural movement was dramatized by these two playwrights and we could then “compare” the treatments—Ibsen by portraying Nora, in a realistic sociological setting, as breaking free of her “depersonalization” by acting on her own, and Liza Doolittle in Pygmalion (from the ancient story of a statue “coming to life”) coming into a higher stratum of society by being groomed by a man--two distinctly different views of Feminism in society. The comparisons could also be made regarding the public popularity of the two performances. Generically, while both are drama, one is comic and exaggerated while the other is “realistic.”
