Language basically refers to a method of communication between human beings. There are about 3000 to 6000 different types of language in use on the Earth today. These languages may be spoken, or vocal, or they may be gestural, done with hand motions, as in signing for deaf people. The art of communication with one another can take on many different forms, in both a spoken format and a nonspoken format.
Language can also refer to an operating system among computer systems. There are different operating systems among the different computer manufacturers. These operating systems all use different languages to communicate with each other. They are similar to the definition of language between humans used above in that it is an attempt between computers and computer systems to communicate with each other. The study of languages is called linguistics.
