I think of Ghandi, of course. Unlike other countries that revolted against their imperial forces, the Indian Independence Movement tried various ways to convince the British to leave. It does sound foolish, but the idea was to appeal to the British through marches, hunger strikes and protests.

Civil disobedience was the overall strategy and group tactic used during much of the Indian Independence Movement.  They utilized what was, for the most part, their singular overwhelming advantage, that of numbers, and conducted sit down strikes, occupied colonial buildings, and loud protests in the centers of power involving tens and sometimes hundreds of thousands of protestors. Their gradual and inevitable success at gaining independence from the British Empire became the basis for later similar tactics used in the American Civil Rights Movement.
