Themes in the Young Goodman Brown that contribute to the gloomy or evil tone is the woods. The woods, in christianity, reresents the unknown, the devil, evil. It is dark, mysterious and without light which represents heavenly beings.

The idea that Young Goomdan Brown is able to resist such dark temptations but still ends up alone and bitter in the end shows how Brown judges those who follows or gives in to those dark symbols.
