Lucy's 1922 VW Golf travelling at an unknown speed due East collides with Susan's Pinto(assume Pinto does not explode). at an unmarked icy intersection. After the collision, the Golf moves off at an angle of 40 degree SofE at an initial speed of 50km/h and the Pinto moves off at an angle of 30 degree Sof E at an initial speed of 30 km/h. Dtermine the speed of the two vehicles before the collision if the mass of the Golf is 1800 kg and the mass of the Pinto is 1200kg.

Susan's is traveling in her 1977 Ford Pinto due South. Lucy's 1922 VW Golf traveling at an unknown speed due East collides with Susan's Pinto at an unmarked icy intersection. After the collision, the Golf moves off at an angle of 40 degree S of E at 50 km/h and the Pinto moves off at an angle of 30 degree S of E at 30 km/h.

Let the initial speed of the Pinto be X and the initial speed of the VW Golf be Y. During the collision momentum is conserved. The final momentum of the two cars towards the South and the East can be determined. The component toward the South is 1200*30*sin 30 + 1800*50*sin 40 = 75850.88 kg*m/s. The component toward the East is 1200*30*cos 30 + 1800*50*cos 40 = 100120.91 kg*m/s.

The initial speed of the Pinto traveling South was 63.2 km/h. The initial speed of the Golf was 55.62 km/h
