This integral is using the power law for polynomials `int x^n dx=1/{n+1}x^{n+1}` for all `n ne -1` .

This means that the integral becomes

`int_{-1}^2 3x^2 dx`     use power law

`=(3 1/3 x^3)_{-1}^2`    cancel out the 3s

`=2^3-(-1)^3`    simplify

The integral is 9.
