Bull fighting works on a few levels in the novel. One significance of the bull fighting is the ritual nature of the sport and the rigid culture of the sport. Dignity and self-denial are large part of the sport, as it is presented in the text. These are qualities that characterize Jake through much of the novel as well, sometimes aspirationally.
