Chapter 8: Two-Bit and Pony visit Johnny in the hospital and Johnny confesses to Pony that he is not ready to die. Johnny also refuses to see his mother and loses consciousness at the end of their visit. Two-Bit and Pony then visit Dally, who is upset that his injury will prevent him from participating in the rumble. After the boys inform Dally about Johnny's condition, he asks for Two-Bit's switchblade and he gives it to Dally without hesitating. At home, Darry and the other Greasers think that Pony is too sick to participate in the rumble and Pony voices his concerns about the upcoming fight to Two-Bit. Two-Bit and Pony then meet Cherry Valance in a vacant lot and she informs them that the Socs will obey the rules during the rumble. Pony then gets upset at Cherry for not wanting to visit Johnny but ends their conversation on a positive note.

Chapter 9: Before the rumble, Pony takes five aspirin while no one is looking and comments on why each Greaser member enjoys fighting as they walk to the rumble. The Greasers team up with Tim Shepard's gang and some boys from Brumly, who are complete hoods and future convicts. When the Socs arrive, Darry faces off against a Soc and former friend, Paul Holden, who throws the first punch to begin the rumble. During the rumble, Ponyboy is violently kicked in the head and suffers a concussion. Dally ends up joining the fight and helps Ponyboy. The rumble is brutal and violent but the Greasers win as the Socs retreat from the vacant lot. Dally then grabs Ponyboy and speeds towards the hospital to see Johnny and tell him the good news about their victory over the Socs. At the hospital, Dally threatens the doctor, who allows them to see Johnny for the last time. After Dally tells Johnny about the rumble, Johnny responds by saying that fighting is useless and tells Pony to "Stay gold" before he tragically passes away. Dally is stricken with grief and flees from the hospital as Pony stands in shock.
