Three important points in relation to the book are that the subject of women's oppression needs to be more of a priority for journalists, that prostitution is virtually synonymous with slavery, and that female empowerment is the biggest weapon in the fight against female inequality.

As journalists, Kristof and WuDunn are all too aware of how relatively little media coverage the subject of female inequality receives. In this sense, the media are all too often part of the problem and not the solution. That being the case, the media need to brush up their act and start giving the subject, which affects tens of millions of women all across the globe, the coverage it deserves.

As well as changing their opinions concerning what is or isn't a journalistic priority, Kristof and WuDunn also come to a different perspective concerning prostitution. As with many people, they originally tended to see it as the product of opportunism or dire economic need.

However, after investigating the issue thoroughly, they arrive at the stark conclusion that prostitution is virtually synonymous with slavery, bound up as it is with an international network of human traffickers who trick women and girls into prostitution with fake job offers, only to force them into lives of violence, rape, and abuse.

The answer to the problem of female inequality is empowerment, and that comes mainly from education. If girls can get the same educational opportunities as boys, they stand a much better chance of living independent lives in which they are more in control of their destinies.
