Hannah entertains her new friends by telling them stories of movies and books. They are completely confused by Star Wars, but impressed with most of the others.
She mesmerized them with her tellings. After the first one, which they had interrupted every third sentence with questions, they were an attentive audience, and silent except for their infrequent loud sighs and Esther’s nervous laughter at all the wrong moments. (ch 7, p. 50)
Hannah learns about the old-fashioned customs of the people, including marriage by matchmakers. Women do not marry for love. Hannah is impressed by the badchan, who is hired to tell jokes and make fortunes and seems to realize that she is not what she seems.
Chapter 7 is the last chapter where things are normal and charming. Hannah enjoys herself and begins to fit in. She does not realize what is coming.
