When the angry mob came to find Hannah Tupper, Kit ran through the night to warn her.  Kit persuaded the woman to leave her house and took her down to the river to hide.  First, they hid under some poplar trees.  This hiding spot was in between the cornfield and the river.  It was dark, but Kit knew that morning would arrive soon.  She was terrified of Hannah being found by the angry mob.  She was worried that they might hurt her friend.

Morning light came slowly, and Kit considered taking Hannah to her aunt and uncle's house for safety.  She did not need to do this, because in the river she saw something completely unexpected:

First two points of mast, then sails, transparent and wraithlike in the fog, then, as Kit strained her eyes, the looming hull, the prow, and the curved tail of a fish.  The Dolphin!

Kit was overcome with relief when she saw the familiar ship.  She got the attention of the crew, and Nat agreed to take Hannah aboard to keep her safe.  Nat took Hannah back to Saybrook to stay with his grandmother.
