The boys submit to the power of the conch—even Jack, to an extent. It represents order and authority and binds the group together. If they are flung to the far corners of the island, the conch has the power to bring them together. If there is a disagreement, the conch has the power to force the boys to listen to various perspectives; only the person holding the conch is allowed to speak. Thus, the boys recognize the power of the conch and at first are cognizant of their submission to all it represents. This is most notable in the narration which notes that the group recognizes Jack as the most "obvious" leader—but Ralph has the power of the conch.

This toy of voting was almost as pleasing as the conch. Jack started to protest but the clamor changed from the general wish for a chief to an election by acclaim of Ralph himself.
