Social media can be seen as a two-edged sword. It has some major advantages. One of these is that it makes it very easy for us to stay in touch with one another. Social networking enables us to maintain relationships that we might not have been able to maintain in the past. It can help us feel more connected to one another. On a more tangible level, social media can help us to do things like networking. We can find out about jobs and other such things from people with whom we are connected.
However, some people have a rather negative view of social networking. There are two main criticisms. First, it is said that social networking weakens our ties with other people. We may be more connected with others, but our connections are superficial. We are not as closely tied to others as we once were. In addition, social networking can expose us to people with bad intentions. We can be stalked on the internet. We can be harassed or bullied. We can put too much of our lives out there on the internet and open ourselves up to things like identity theft.
In these ways, the prevalence of social networking can be both a good and a bad thing.
