Bradbury'sThe Martian Chroniclesoffers an interesting contrast between the supposed advancement of the human race through technology and the reality of humanity's self-destruction.  In many ways,The Martian Chronicles is a warning about the direction that Bradbury thought humanity was headed. Stories like "The Taxpayer," "There Will Come Soft Rains," and "The Million Year Picnic" show the earth as facing annhilation through atomic war.
