Great question to consider. I suppose one of the biggest similarities is that both texts focus on one protagonist and how he doesn't fit in to the world of which he is a part. However, I would want to argue that the similarities stop there, because they show themselves to be very different after this. Firstly, let us remember that Holden is an incredibly amusing storyteller who loves to make up tales about himself and to fool other people, ironically showing himself to possess the same characteristic of being phony that he so despises in other people. In addition, Holden is suffering some form of mental breakdown, and perhaps this is the result of unresolved issues of grief after his brother's death. He expresses his rebellion against society by going off by himself.

By contrast, Jim Stark in the film seems to rebel because of the conflict that is present in his family rather than through any unresolved grief. The film sets the struggles of Jim Stark against a wider backdrop of the decline of the American family and the moral decay of the American youth. Jim's struggles highlight the divide between the generations and act as a critique of parenting styles which serve only to divide one generation from the other. Holden's family, by contrast, is shown to be very stable on the whole.

I hope this gives you some ideas to start comparing these two texts. I have included some links below to help you analyse their differences further. Good luck!
