The story opens on Christmas Eve, focusing on Ebenezer Scrooge, a cold old miser who owns a counting house in London. He can't get into the Christmas spirit, despite carolers singing for him and his nephew visiting him and inviting him to Christmas dinner the next day. He responds, "Bah! Humbug!" to anything about Christmas. Two men from a charity stop by to ask for a donation for the poor. Scrooge is rude to them, saying that if the poor are going to die, then they should do it sooner rather than later and decrease the surplus population. His clerk, Bob Cratchit, asks for the next day off, and Scrooge grudgingly agrees.

That night, Scrooge receives a visit from the ghost of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley, who tells him that he is now paying for how greedy he was in life. He wears chains and suffers torments. He tells Scrooge that three spirits will visit him.
