The first quote, spoken by Winston to Julia in George Orwell's novel 1984, is referencing Big Brother's control over their lives. Winston is telling Julia that as long as they have control over their own feelings then they have not let Big Brother defeat them. He is stating that it does not matter what they say, but what they feel. This is foreshadowing what happens later when Winston breaks.
