The active voice focuses on the person (or object) who is doing an action:
John threw the ball.
The shredding machine tore the paper to bits.
She has a pen.
The passive voice focuss on the object (or person) who is receiving the action; I sometimes like to say that the passive voice focuses on the "victim" of the action. Here are some examples:
The ball was thrown by John.
The paper was torn to bits by the shredding machine.
The pen was held by the woman.
The pen has held by her. You put the direct object into the first part of the sentence. Not good writing. The best writing is not passive.
