The concept of sexuality and the act of sex shape characters in various ways.  For example, Cholly recalls a situation from his youth in which he is caught in the woods by the police while he is making love to a girl.  The police berate him and Cholly feels emasculated by the event.  His negative experience with sex follows him throughout this life and challenges his perception of what it means to be a man.
