As seen in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, does Sir Gawain successfully display the five virtues of the Pentangle? I had trouble distinguishing the virtues. I read two different versions, and I'm getting alternate virtues for each. I personally think Sir Gawain displayed the virtues successfully, but I wanted to hear someone else's point of view to write my essay.

You’re right, the five virtues of the pentangle can be difficult to interpret due to the Old English language. These virtues include friendship, fraternity, purity, politeness, and pity. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one of the most well-known and quintessential Arthurian narratives, so it makes sense that the protagonist would embody these qualities. The prominence of the description of the pentangle, combined with the fact that the symbol exists on Gawain’s shield, also reinforces that assumption. The pentangle symbolizes the eternal, which manifests in the Green Knight, who survives his beheading.

The idea of friendship is represented when the Green Knight approaches Arthur’s court on New Year’s Day. The Green Knight says that he has come for a friendly game. Gawain’s acceptance shows his participation in the friendship associated with the game. Gawain also embodies fraternity by accepting the challenge when all of the other knights were too nervous to.
