Can anyone explain:  "I sat on the floor next to the coffee table, where a tray of food waited" - Bella (Twilight Chapter 20).

This occurs on Chapter 20 (Impatience), where Bella is in the hotel living room with Jasper and Alice. What I don't understand is why Bella eats on the floor. It sounds a little strange, if she cant just sit on the couch or a chair.

Can anyone explain?

Bella is a teenager.  It is not uncommon for a teenager to sit on the floor. It is actually a more comfortable height for a coffee table if there is food on it.

She is the only one in the room who needs to eat food, so there was no reason to move from the floor to another spot like the bed or a chair...which of course would have been more uncomfortable to eat since there is no real table or chairs in the room.

I am not sure why Meyer included this detail except to show us just how out of sorts and on "auto-pilot" Bella is. She seems completely at ease with her vampire chaperones and non-plussed at the fact that she needs food while they do not.

Bella has a lot of questionable choices so I believe this was one where she simply just sat down because she felt like it. She may have wanted to be lazy and not sit properly or be 'a rebel'. Sometimes its hard to understand what Bella wants...

Bella, as I would like to say, is a character full of questionable actions. With this I would say that Bella was just being lazy and rebelling against all things that may have seemed "natural" and "human." Though she could have been admiring the food questioning why she had to eat such mundane things in the presence of vampires. Knowing Bella it is hard to pinpoint most of the time even though the books are written from her perspective.

well coffe tables are small and anyone would prefere eating closer to your food besides i belive alice is already sitting on the couch-she really doesnt eat much shes to anxious
