A Rose for Emily: Failures & Irony

Consider the mixed quality of the townspeople's reactions to Miss Emily's 'failures'. I'm stuck on what Emily's failures were.

Miss Emily could have failed at asserting herself with her father. He discouraged all suitors because they were supposedly not good enough for her, and she allowed him to become her whole life. By the time he died, she was completely dependent on him, and had no usable social skills.

I would think that at some point a girl would want to leave the nest, and surely she could have made him understand this.
