Fine art is used as an example of how the Duke treats beautiful objects (Neptune taming a seahorse...) as conquered possessions of his, including his last duchess, whose portrait he treats with ridicule and jealousy.

What makes the poem dynamic and dramatic is that it takes place during an ambassador's visit to determine whether the Duke's next bride will suit all parties; the under-dialogue reveals to us, to reader, the true character of the Duke, leaving us to speculate as to whether the ambassador is perceptive enough to note and report the clues.

As for literary devices, every line is perfectly formed, regarding rhythm, feet, rhyme, etc.; the images are vivid and unforced.
