As you work on this assignment, your first step should be researching the business uses of computers. At the current time, computers are used in many different areas of business, and your choice of systems will depend on the specific applications for which you intend to use the system.

One ubiquitous area in which computers are used is communication, including email and web access. All models of computer have these capabilities. Most businesses have websites and some sort of social media presence. For designing a website, you should have a relatively large screen (20  to 24 inches) in order to see all the design elements of your page.

Although Apple systems are favored by most designers, Windows is still more common for business applications, and thus you may want to restrict your selection of computers to Windows-based systems unless you plan to work in advertising or design.

Another major benefit of computers in the workplace is their ability to store, organize, sort, and retrieve information. Most computer systems are capable of running database software, but for larger databases or ones with significant amounts of visual information, you may need a cloud- or server-based system.

Many companies also use computers to support such functions as accounting, human resource management, and sales management, as automated systems are considerably faster than manual ones.

To determine what sort of computer you need, you should look at the hardware requirements of the software packages you are most likely to use.
