Nietzsche issued the famous statement that "God is dead." He believed that the Western world had killed off the need for a god by turning instead to science and observation to answer life's major questions, questions that Christianity and the Catholic Church had been responsible for answering during the Middle Ages. Nietzsche proposed that morality and truth were both to be decided by the individual rather than a religious organization, and promoted the Superman complex instead. He also presented Christianity and other religious systems as making man slave to overbearing moral obligation. These principles have replaced Christianity in focus, adding to its decline in the Western World.
