Making use of their physical properties can separate the items in your experiment.  Thus, the variables in your experiment will consist of those properties.  Properties that can be used or studied in terms of their effectiveness in the separation are as follows.

Variable 1:  Particle Size

Allows separation by sifting or straining.

Variable 2:  Solubility

The salt could be removed from the others by immersion in water.

Variable 3:  Magnetic attraction

The iron filings could be separated from the others with a magnet.

Variable 4:  Combustibility

Compared to the poppy seeds and salt, the iron filings and sand would be unaffected by flame.
