Let the number to be determined be N.

The product of 5 and N subtracted from 23 is equal to twice of N increased by 9

=> 23 - 5N = 2N + 9

=> 23 - 9 = 7N

=> 7N = 14

=> N = 2

The required number is 2.

23 - 5x = 2x + 9

move like terms to the same side:

23 - 9 = 2x + 5x

simplify:

14 = 7x

divide by 7

2 = x

the number is 2
