Medieval art differs greatly from Classical or Renaissance art in both form and spirit; for the most part, the difference lies in its otherworldliness. For the medieval artist, the human body was no longer to be depicted as a celebration of its naturalistic form as the Greeks and Romans believed; instead, the human form was to be used to express spirituality. Thus, the purpose of art became the glorification of God, and artists collaborated in the production of such enormous projects such as the Gothic cathedrals.
Giotto di Bondone broke from this Byzantine tradition by introducing a focus on illusionistic pictorial space. His flat plane and decorative line mark a return to the naturalism of the Classical age. His colors are restrained; soft shadows are used to create dimension in the Virgin and Child. In contrast to other Byzantine art, the volume and three-dimensional quality to the bodies and the pull of gravity can be sensed in Giotto's work. Unlike his contemporaries, Giotto drew from life, so in his painting of the Madonna and Child there is a sense of movement and emotion as the Infant, who is turned to His mother, maintains His balance by holding the Mother's finger. And, much like any baby, He reaches for the flower His mother holds. Giotto di Bondone's figures are both human and divine, qualities that characterize the Italian Renaissance.
