Poetry is an art form in which language is used for its aesthetic qualities. Aesthetic means that something has a pleasing appearance or, in this case, sound. A poet is an artist just like a painter. Where the painter uses paint and brushes to create his/her art, the poet uses words and specific literary devices to create their art. In poetry, words are chosen for how they look or sound above their actual meaning. This differs from prose where the author selects words based on their meaning rather than their sound. While there are many different types of poetry, each still creates a work of art using words selected for their aesthetic qualities.
