Homosexuality has always been present in social orders. However, I think that it has only been relatively recently where I think that one can see how homosexuality has impacted and transformed society. The ability to engage in open discourse about concepts that were never questioned is where homosexuality has had a profound impact on society.
In the last twenty to thirty years, there has been a tremendous demonstration of how homosexuality impacts society. The development of understanding about how homosexuality is more than a "choice," but rather "hard- wired" into the individual's consciousness is a part of this. The process of "coming out" has gained greater understanding. Expanding hate crime legislation to include people who are gay, lesbian, or transgendered is another way in which homosexuality has impacted society in its expansion of the discourse. The most recent debate that has reached the Supreme Court about the issue of gay marriage is another example of how homosexuality has impacted society. It has forced wider and more inclusive discussion of elements that society once understood as monolithic. In this expansion of dialogue, homosexuality has demonstrated a profound impact on society.
