A synopsis of a story is a summary. This may be challenging to write for "The Story of an Hour" as the story is already short.

In a nutshell, a woman named Mrs. Mallard finds out her husband has been killed in a train accident. Neighboring women and her sister come over to comfort her. Mrs. Mallard goes off by herself to deal with her grief. At first, she is sad, but then she realizes she is free for the first time in her life. Even though she liked her husband, and he was good to her, she is suddenly filled with great joy that she is liberated to be her own person. She looks forward eagerly to rest of her life. When she comes out of her room she sees her husband walking up to their house. Recognizing that report of his death was a mistake, Mrs. Mallard almost immediately dies of a heart attack. The neighbors think she has died of joy at the shock of seeing her husband alive.

Above is a synopsis of the story that recounts what happened. However, you might want to add a bit of interpretation: we as readers know Mrs. Mallard died of shock and sadness that her newfound freedom was yanked away, not from joy at seeing her husband alive.
