This prompt asks for a student to apply Maslow's theory of the hierarchy of needs to their own personal lives. There is no right or wrong answer here, but rather it is intended to stimulate a process of self reflection.

The main steps a student needs to take in answering this question are to go through the hierarchy of needs applying them to their own life. The paper should start with an introduction, discussing which unmet need is most important to the student and then review the needs in order, applying them to the student's life.

The first level that should be discussed are physiological needs. A student who is living with food insecurity or chronic pain might want to address these sorts of needs, or a student athlete might want to discuss issues of physical training and health. A student who generally has met these needs should note that these needs have been met.

Next, the student should discuss safety needs. Since these include financial safety, this is where a student might discuss issues such as student loans, financial stress, and career goals. Health insurance might fit under this category as would worries about campus sexual assaults or other possible fears for personal safety. COVID-19 would fit under this as well.

If the lower levels of needs have been met, a student would focus on how the issues of social belonging and self-esteem impact their own lives, discussing issues such as family relationships, romantic connections, and friendships. Finally, if all other levels of needs have been met, this essay might focus on self-actualization.
