In the first chapter of the book, readers do not get anything overly specific about how Johnny exhibits signs and symptoms of PTSD. We are repeatedly told that Johnny simply looked and acted nervous all of the time. Readers also know why this is the case as Ponyboy tells us right away that Johnny was jumped and beaten quite badly by the Socs. He is also abused at home.
