The things we see--the things we know, those are the things for which we can prepare. In "My Sister's Keeper" the parents were devastated by the diagnosis of cancer, but even so the knowing gave them power to deal with it. What "killed" them was the unexpected response of the daughter when she decided she did not want to be used anymore for spare parts. Ironically, the daughter was prepared for the parents displeasure, and she dealt with it appropriately, but it was, in a very literal way, the car which she didn't see coming that killed her.
